IMPROVE YOUR CALLIGRAPHY

Sun., Apr. 14, 2-4:30 p.m.

Have you taken a beginner course in modern calligraphy, but somehow your work still looks a little off? You’ve been practicing with guides and doing your best to make cards and quotes, but you can’t put your finger on why it doesn’t look like the references you’re copying…

In this intermediate calligraphy course, you’ll learn how to assess and analyze your work so you can improve your practice. We’ll review the proper way to hold and use a dip pen with a nib and do a quick refresher on posture and proper paper placement. We will not be covering letters or a specific alphabet, but instead, I’ll share professional tips on how to make your letterforms consistent, your spacing pleasing, and your lines straight.

This class is for those who are familiar with using a dip pen and nib. It is not recommended that you take this class without a basic understanding of how to use the materials. However, that is ALL you need to know to take this class! Even if you took a beginner course months ago, you’ll still be able to follow along with this workshop.

Supplies are not included in this class.

Recommended Supplies:

  • your favorite pen holder (straight or oblique)
  • your favorite nibs (some I like: Nikko G, Hunt 22B, Hunt 101, Leonardt EF)
  • Canson Marker Paper with calligraphy guidelines (55 degree slant recommended)
  • Rhodia grid paper or blank paper (or your favorite practice paper)
  • sumi ink or walnut ink
  • red ballpoint pen
  • ruler
  • pencil and eraser

Please arrive early to order a cocktail and some snacks before class begins!

HELEN ZIGA ARTIST SHOWCASE

Fri., Apr. 19, 7-8 p.m.

Join us for Helen Ziga’s Gallery Showcase. Ziga will be in the Watson Gallery discussing her work and answering guest questions.

Artist Statement:

I am inspired by the beauty and complexity of color and shape, making reference to the physical world as I experience it. The aesthetic of my artwork is a geometric, hard-edged abstraction. I use large and small shapes, lines, patterns and color relationships to represent a metaphor about the space and control an artist has over said visual space. While at first glance the artworks are aesthetically pleasing, I purposefully provide multiple points for the eye to rest. The size of the panel, the compositional scale, color saturation and brightness, proximity and distance, create a planar surface that does not stop moving. My intent is to ensure the painting has no object, no singular point that the viewer can depend on to define the composition. The eye will be continuously redirected to other areas of the plane. There is no place for rest.

My artistic lineage comes from Minimalism, the Graphic Arts and Feminism, occasionally converging geometric shapes with craft-based materials. I create acrylic paintings on canvas, wood and paper and often incorporate embroidery as a nod to craft. I relate to the texture and warmth embroidery adds to a surface. Much of my work is mapped out in advance, sketched out in Adobe Illustrator, and drawn on the surface before I begin painting. This process allows me to focus as I take the work into its final form.

Your ticket includes a cocktail before the event.
